Sound / Acoustic insulation

That's based on hard lab data.

No, I was refering to using the cheapest low density batt insulation for acoustical purposes. I would advocate using whatever is lease expensive in your area.

Sound / Acoustic insulation

General Rules of Thumb:
Use a lower density insulation when available. This is typically standard batt insulation for thermal purposes.
Don't compress.
If the cavity is 50% - 70% full of…

Cheers to you as well Greg.

Nice sumary Greg. This thread points out an important thing. Insulation intuitively seems to be a very valuable thing, however it is actually only a small contributor to the larger…

Sound check vs sound screen

Nice summary, Greg.
In addition to the clips offering a reduction in contact points (less conduction), the decoupling also immediately lowers the resonance point of the assembly. This is directly related…

Sound / Acoustic insulation

Johnson,
There are 4 elements of soundproofing:
#1 Decoupling. Could be double stud framing, resilient clips, etc
#2 Absorption. This is one of a number of insulations, generally.
#3 Mass. Standard plasterboard is…

Building our new home in Hornsby

Hi Greg,
So how's this all coming along?

15 years15 yearsTed WhiteTed White posted:

Decoupled walls and ceiling. Great.
Lots of mass from the plasterboard- also great.
I assume you have some low/medium density insulation planned for the walls and ceiling?
Take care to install the…

Soundproofing a nursery in an apartment block..

It is much easier, more effective and less expensive to field damp rather than buy factory damped plasterboard.

Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board???

Yes you can have both and ideally you would have all 4 elements. In reality you would have an award winning wall if you:
Decoupled the wall via staggered studs…

Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board???

Both materials are doing different things. The plasterboard is mass. Many different ways to get a wall heavy. Standard plasterboard is heavy also.
Insulation is providing some absorption in the…

While carpets and drapes will help reduce the echo and sound within the room, it will not help with soundproofing. If the sound wave has sufficient energy to enter the…

Help with Sound Proofing

Eskay40 is right. People are sometimes satisfied with insulation, however of the 4 elements of soundproofing (decoupling, absorption, mass and damping) absorption (insulation) is the least contributive. Similarly, when people…

Noisy building - built in 1920's

You don't want to create a second air cavity. Unless the second cavity is significantly larger than the original, you won't see much of an improvement at all. Very well…

Green glue

Green Glue damps vibration. That is, it converts vibration to heat. Damping is one of 4 different elements of sound isolation:
Decoupling (like the resilient channel mentioned earlier)
Absorption (simple insulation)
Mass (the…
