A Helpful Guide for Glass Window and Door Selection

When renovating or building a new home, it is best to have knowledge on what kind of glazing and frame material you would want to install. The question is, what is the most suitable glass window or door for each room in your new house?
Glass windows and doors are also known as “glazing” or “fenestration” has different types. Before deciding on the glazing, first decide on what kind of frame material you would like to go with.

GLAZING FRAME TYPES:
The material for the framing should be greatly taken into consideration when selecting not only for design and aesthetics purposes, but also when it comes to efficiency. Here are different kinds of frame material.
  1. Timber
  2. Aluminium
  3. uPVC/Vinyl
TIMBER FRAME
Timber framing are generally high maintenance, since they require constant refinishing over the course of their lifetime. You cannot deny the beauty and natural warmth that this material would bring in to your home especially when the aesthetics in your house consists of organic materials. With this choice you can also create and indoor-outdoor ambiance to your home.

ALUMINIUM FRAME
Aluminium framing widely used domestically and commercially. Factors like budget, aesthetic preferences and opening size, you are able to choose standard residential framing, commercial aluminium framed glazing, or a level in between. You can choose between two types of finishing which is powder coated finish, or anodised.

UPVC FRAME
uPVC framing also known as “Vinyl Framing” designed for unprecedented performance and exceptional aesthetics, this material is a great fit for every style of home in any climate. Engineered to protect your family from Sydney’s hot summers and cold winters. Not only does it protects you family from extreme weathers, but also protects you from soaring energy prices with its thermally efficient systems.

OPENING TYPES OR TYPES OF OPERABLE WINDOWS

FIXED WINDOWS
The name says it all, fixed windows does not open. There are some instances where you would only want the view, and not necessarily the ventilation. This type of frame generally is finer to utilise the view better.

SLIDING WINDOWS
In aluminium frames, this is the least expensive in the product range of operable windows. Easy to screen as they move within the frame. Generally, screen tracks are built in as standard in sliding windows.

AWNING WINDOW
Awning windows push out from the base, with either using winder system or ‘friction stays’ (levers you unlatch to then push the window out). Of course, winders have a chain attached to them, so the amount of the opening of this type of window is restricted. To be able to screen this, you would need to do it on the inside - if a winder operation, there will be a little adjustable part of the screen to open (and open the window) and then close the screen back up.

CASEMENT
These windows are hinged on the side and open outwards. They are brilliant for capturing breeze - as you can angle them to channel breeze inside. You can use them as solid or obscured panels to have full control on view and privacy.

LOUVRE
One of the more expensive choices, louvre windows like casement windows are amazing for ventilation. The blades can be in clear, tinted or obscure glass and timber and aluminium blades can also be used.

BIFOLD
Bifold windows or door are concertina back with a top and bottom frame. They’re often used as an opening to the outside - as it will fold out of the way.

SASHLESS OR FRAMELESS
A sashless or frameless window is a double-hung window where there’s no edge framing on the moving parts of glass. So the windows panes or panels slide past each other on a counter balance, and there’s a small handle on the window itself.
