Kensington Plaster Makeover
By Dial-a-Plasterer|November 18, 2013
This single sided Victorian Terrace has been in the same family for over 50 years. For the last 10 years it was rented out. The whole building was in need of major repairs.
The lath plaster walls and ceilings had deteriated and were beyond feasible repair. After close inspection, we advised the most feasible solution would be to plaster over the existing lath walls and ceilings.
This solution has many advantages:
1. Saves cost of demolition
2. Saves cost on carpentry
3. Gives greater sound and insulation properties.
The ceilings were reinforced with metal battens which gave a sound surface to fix plasterboard to. Plasterboard was adhered with screws and nails and hid all the imperfect lath walls.
We used Topline Cornice Victorian gutter mould no. 12B (210mm x 160mm) throughout which was ideal for the 3.3m high ceilings. Each room had the appropriate sized and style of ceiling rose and venta installed.
The passage was quite long so we decided to build 2 arches giving the passage a grand look complemented with light fittings and a carpet ordered from England.
Arches need special attention. The right height is so important and the width of the arch gives you the choice of corbels and architraes. Arch architraes are done to measure and hand run in our workshop.
Before you start your plaster renovation, give us a call and we can assist with your project.
The final result was very impressive. Mark and his wife now have a home full of Victorian character.
It is very important that the plasterer is confident in all aspects of plaster renovations. Each room needs balance and stay true to historical style.
