What is backloading and is it the cheapest way to move?

When it comes time to move house and you begin the search for a removalist - you are more than likely going to come across the term back-loading. A lot of people do not know exactly what is involved in backloading and the promise of money saved is sometimes too tempting to bother about reading the fine print. Certainly backloading is a great option for some but when you are uprooting your family and home, you want to have peace of mind that the job of moving your precious possesions is done right, on that note, we always suggest investigating all the options available to you before making a decision on your removalist.
Simply put, in addition to backloading, there are two main options available to you should you be moving interstate in Australia. The first (and most expensive) option is a full service removalist. These guys will come to you home and take care of the whole process; from packing your best china into cardboard cartons, transporting it to your new home and then unpacking at the other end. There is the option to use them only for transportation, where you do the packing, however this is not usually a cost effective option.
For those of us who don't want to pay top dollar and don't mind getting involved, then the self pack (or DIY removals) option may be the way to go. You can save a lot of money but doing the packing yourself and generally speaking, most people fit their household contents into a 20ft shipping container that can be relocated to most places anywhere in Australia.
Backload removals offer a cheap way of moving where you only pay for the amount of space you use on a truck. The load is not dedicated to your items though (as in self pack removals) so you are sharing the space with any number of people using the same truck. While you only pay for the space you use, the timing may not always suit you. Your things could be loaded on first and then the truck would wait until a full load has been added before transportation occurs. It can be ideal for say a student moving a bed and a small amount of furniture but not so convenient for a family moving their household contents where timing and reliability is crucial.
