Moving Interstate with Motorcycles?

Many of our customers inquire about moving vehicles in our moving containers and whether or not it is possible. The answer is Yes! We frequently transport cars, motorcycles, scooters and industrial equipment interstate in Australia. This article is focusing on providing advice for moving your motorcycle. For a more detailed look at this subject you may want to go to our website and navigate to the Moving Resources page, where you can see a full detailed instruction list on packing your motorcycle in a shipping container. These instructions were provided by a motorcycle enthusiast customer of ours who was very kind in detailing his experience to help.
The condensed version of his tips are as follows:
  • Before packing you motorcycle for transport in a moving container, remove excess fuel by syphoning or removing the fuel lines and draining the tank.
  • If you are moving one motorcycle it is best placed in the rear end of the container, facing across the container with the front wheel tied tightly into the tie off point in the corner. It is worth investing in good quality tie downs for this job to ensure no movement of your motorcycle in the container.
  • If you are moving multiple bikes, a cheap thick foam mattress is a perfect buffer between the bikes to prevent rubbing damage. You would stack bikes across the bike in opposite directions to the previous to prevent the handlebars clashing.
  • To prevent any movement of the motorcycle side to side you can mount some sections of timber either side of the front wheel using self tapping wood screws in the container floor (these are easily removed afterwards).
  • Be sure to remove all mirrors.
  • For bikes with long travel front suspension, you will need to protect against compression of the front suspension. The is done by pulling the suspension down onto a block of wood or an old oil container so there is no or minimal compression of the suspension.
