4-6 weeks before your move
- Research your new home
- Contact removalists and ask for recommendations
- Speak to your removalist about packing recommendations
- Got a pet? Look at options for pet care and book it in
- Book in annual leave with work (include a few days either side)
- Arrange transport for bikes, boats, trailers and caravans.
- Piano, pool table or grandfather clock? Make sure your removalist can take care of these and specialise in it.
- Move your important docs (passports, visas, currency, credit cards etc) to a special place so they won't get boxed up.
- Start decluttering
- Contact suppliers (water, electricity and gas)
- Contact your insurance
- Transfer documents for school, day-care, sporting clubs etc
- Obtain a floor plan for your new house and measure up
- Book your local moves or interstate removlist and let them know about anything such as street access, steep driveways, overhanging trees etc
- Schedule & book cleaning
- Plan your move
- Organise your utilities for your new home
- Label & number moving boxes
- Prepare and organise large house items
- Confirm the key collection details for your new place
- Update your details (electoral rolls, drivers license, rego's, banks, employers, schools and clubs)
- Get your family prepped (looking after kids on moving day)
- If you're moving a great distance, get your car serviced before you go
- Organise mail, subscriptions and services
- Ensure the new home is prepared with utilities, contact your new council and have security checked at your new home
- Organise furniture, disassembling anything you that isn't critical to use
- Organise moving boxes
- Important last details
- Have an action plan for moving day
- Ensure final checks of your home
- Get prepared (with cash or cards handy for any last minute expenses)
- Organise last items
- Make sure the new home is ready
- Advise your neighbours
- Advise your new residents with a letter with info (garbage collection, neighbourhood watch etc) to help them settle in
- Complete any forms including exit reports and take photos
- Finish organising for the move
- Say farewell to your old home
- Check items before and after the move
