More on Collar Ties
By HOUSPECT WA Building Inspections|June 22, 2016
In a recent post we raised the importance of collar ties - the ones in the roof not around your neck.
Collar ties are important because they assit in stopping the roof rafters (called rafter couples as groups of two form the peak) from spreading apart and or from sagging inwards.
Making sure that the collar ties are actually there is one thing. Making sure the correct timber and connections have been used is another.
A Houspect WA Building Inspector recently came accross the following in a new home construction in Perth. Apart fromt he fact that the gang nail was incorrect for the job, the manufactures stamp on the timber clearly states that the timber "Must Only Be Used for Rafters". The manufacturer subsequently confirmed that the timber was not suitable for use as collar ties.
