So I’m guessing that you’ve clicked on this link because you’re looking at bringing some direction towards executing a vision or a plan. It’s all fine and dandy to have a plan but now you need to start implementing the plan. The best way to do this is to set yourself some goals.
Goals are a great way of keeping you honest about your progress.
When I set goals I look at the long-term and also the short-term. It’s much easier to start at the long term, or the bigger picture tasks. You don’t just have to focus on setting property goals. Use this system for your business, your personal life or whatever… You will be amazed at the clarity and results this exercise brings to your life.
Let’s say you have set yourself two years (24 months) to complete your first development. In your plan you will have a list of things to be achieved in two years which might include:
• The project constructed and signed off
• Completed landscaping
• Connected electricity, water and gas
• Subdivision approved and occupancy titles released
• Settle on each dwelling
• Repay development loan
• Cash my cheque
For example, these are the items that need to be accomplished to comply with your plan. Once you are aware of what needs to be done in two years, you can work backwards expanding on your list of what needs to be done in order to reach this stage.
So, you would ask yourself: What do I need to do 18 months from now to ensure I can be on track to finish my list in 24 months? Working backwards you would ask the same question at 12 months, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month and this week.
I have designed a template for you to download from here: http://www.nypd.com.au/the-importance-of-goal-setting
It may seem like a lot but small wins and 1%er’s, over the course of a year or two years, adds up to a big step in the right direction. If you consider doing 1% every day you have advanced your personal growth 365% in 12 months. Now that’s absolutely flying! Can you imagine your progress when you are growing and developing at a compounding rate? I’m not even smart enough to work out the maths of that!
So, download the template and begin by drawing a line in the sand. Where are you now and where do you want to be? Be sure to document where you are starting from. This is important because you will need to go back and measure how far you’ve come.
